University President Mark E. Keenum announced today that MSU is annually impacting Mississippi with $3.9 billion in economic activity. Collectively, MSU’s operations and research—including its people—support billions in wages and sustain more than 80,000 jobs statewide, a new study shows.
Mississippi State’s World Class Teaching Program is celebrating 11 teachers who have achieved the prestigious National Board Certification and 12 who have renewed the credential.
The National Board for Professional Teaching Standards, or NBPTS, ranks Mississippi State No. 12 nationwide for number of National Board Certified Teachers, with 997 MSU graduates having earned certification. The Magnolia State ranks eighth in the U.S. for NBCTs with 4,940.

“What we do with the K-9 unit is a huge part of what we do for the university,” MSU Assistant Chief of Police Brian Locke said. “Most police dogs serve about five or six years before they retire. So, nine years is a while and Bessi has done a tremendous job.”

Jason Hopper's journey to NASA started by stepping into the unknown. While studying aerospace engineering at MSU, a fellow student noticed Hopper reading a rocket propulsion textbook with a photo of a space shuttle launch on the cover.
“A guy just walked up and randomly said, ‘Hey, my dad works testing rocket engines,’” Hopper recalled. The fellow student provided him with contact information, and the rest is history. Ownership of the archives and collections of the Ulysses S. Grant Presidential Library and Museum was formally transferred to Mississippi State University March 20. Dr. Richard E. Holmes was the first African American student to enroll at Mississippi State University. Since that day, Dr. Holmes has left a lasting legacy at our university and beyond. After completing his bachelor's degree at Mississippi State, he went on to earn his Doctor of Medicine and became a dedicated ER physician.
In recognition of his remarkable courage and career, our Holmes Cultural Diversity Center was named in his honor in 1991, and he has since had many meaningful interactions mentoring students. Watch to hear his story and the positive impact he made.

Ridwan Ayinla, a MSU doctoral student studying sustainable energy storage systems, is the winner of the recent Pitch Perfect competition held last semester and hosted by the National Organization for the Professional Advancement of Black Chemists and Chemical Engineers in Orlando, Florida.
Ayinla, a native of Afon in Kwara State, Nigeria, said the competition’s final round was spontaneous, requiring quick thinking and collaboration with strangers. Ayinla’s achievement underscores MSU’s dedication to fostering excellence in STEM fields, highlighting the university’s mission to produce leaders capable of addressing today’s pressing challenges.

Mississippi State University (Starkville campus and the Delta Research and Extension Center in Stoneville) will open under normal operations on Tuesday, Jan. 21, after receiving the latest weather advisories.
The MSU-Meridian campus will shift to remote operations all day on Tuesday, Jan. 21, out of an abundance of caution as winter weather is anticipated for that area. A decision on MSU-Meridian operations for Wed., Jan. 22 will be announced on Jan. 21.

MSU and the U.S. Naval Meteorology and Oceanography Command are expanding educational and job opportunities in the Magnolia State. MSU and the Navy division recently signed an Educational Partnership Agreement which will facilitate academic exchanges focused on geosciences, data science and various other disciplines.
“Partnerships like this expose students to the real-world challenges they will be addressing after graduation,” said MSU Dean for Integrative Studies and Northern Gulf Institute Associate Director Jamie Dyer. “By working with CNMOC, students will gain experience working across disciplines and become familiar with some of the advanced technology used in Naval oceanography and meteorology efforts.
