    Estimation of direct and maternal genetic effects of weaning weight of beef calves.
  • Ph. D. Cornell University.
    Evaluation of grass hay and sorghum, maize, and soybean forage for supplementing pastures in Puerto Rico.

EMPLOYMENT HISTORY:

  • 1965 - 1967: International Voluntary Services in Vientiane, Laos as Livestock Advisor. Advised and assisted in operation of livestock teaching and demonstration farm; taught animal husbandry at a teacher training college.
  • 1967 - 1970: United States Agency for International Development (USAID/AGR) in northern Laos as Livestock Advisor. Assisted in refugee resettlement programs by conducting adult farmer training; swine, poultry and fish distributions; and managing agricultural cooperatives.
  • 1970 - 1971: Agricultural Development Organization in Thakhek, Laos as Field Manager. Directed provincial programs in credit sales of fertilizer, in loan collections and in rice purchasing, milling and marketing.
  • 1976 - 1977: Cornell University in cooperation with University of Puerto Rico as Graduate Research Assistant. Conducted thesis research in animal nutrition at Agricultural Experiment Stations at Lajas, Gurabo, Corozal and Rio Piedras. Minor studies were in agronomy, agricultural economics, tropical agriculture and international agricultural development.
  • 1977 - 1978: Glenelg Dehydrators, Ellicott City, Maryland as nutritionist/agronomist. Advised and assisted in all phases of farming, manufacturing and marketing of dehydrated, pelleted whole-plant corn and alfalfa.
  • 1978 - 1984: Clemson University, Edisto Experiment Station, Blackville, South Carolina as Assistant Professor of Animal Science. Project leader in beef-forage systems research in cow-calf production, backgrounding-finishing cattle, and replacement female development. Helped to develop beef-forage simulation models (S-156) for the Southern Region.
  • 1985 - 1987: Pearl River Junior College, Poplarville, Mississippi as Animal Scientist (part time).  Taught introductory animal science (4 credit hours) two semesters.
  • 1998 - 1999: Rajamangala Institute of Technology, Sakon Nakhon, Thailand as visiting scientist on sabbatical leave (6 months). Initiated research at the Sakon Nakhon Agricultural Research and Training Center (SARTC) on fattening of beef cattle in Northeast Thailand. Trained SARTC staff in computer applications for beef and dairy research and production. Consulted on the management and operation of the station beef, dairy and forage operations and how it relates to economics of farming, Thai farmers and agriculture.
  • 1985 - present: Mississippi State University, South Mississippi Branch Experiment Station, Poplarville, Mississippi as Animal Scientist. Project leader for research in beef cow-calf forage systems, backgrounding forage systems and pineland grazing. Responsible for 611 acres of hay and pasture land, 400 to 500 head of beef cattle and associated facilities and equipment for beef/forage production. Supervisor for three herdsmen/technicians.
