TREE ROOTS |
![]() Source: www.arborscapesllc.com 1. PLAN: Accommodate trees into plan to protect tree roots and allow space for tree canopy. Provide detailed site parking, material storage, underground utility placement, and traffic patterns in site plan that provide trees with adequate protection zones. Consider tree species, vigor, location, and desirability and provide appropriate protective measures. Consider removal prior to construction if the tree is deemed undesirable. 2. Construct tree protection barrier. Allow 1 foot for every 1 inch of tree diameter minimum. Ensure all contractors and workers understand the purpose and importance of this barrier. Do not allow this barrier to be adjusted or removed. 3. Avoid soil compaction under tree canopy. Avoid parking equipment or vehicles under tree canopy at all
times. Avoid material storage under tree canopy. Ninety percent of tree roots are in the top 6-12 inches of soil. Grading significantly damges and removes essential feeding and structural roots. Fill material affects the soil oxygen and root depth causing significant tree stress. 5. Avoid trenching under tree canopy. Severing ONE major root can eliminate 5 to 20% of the tree root system. If trenching must occur near a tree, consider tunneling under root system. If a tree or its roots are damaged, the tree will need mulch and supplemental water to help it survive.
